JERRY DUNLOP'S PIKE FISHING TIP OF THE MONTH:

When fishing in cabbage beds, keep the casts short.

Yes this is true, the best way to keep control of your lure is with a shorter cast. It is a lot easier to maneuver your lure between the weeds with a shorter cast. You don’t need the long cast like you do in a clear shallow bay where the pike might be spooked by the boat. Place a shorter cast at one end of the cabbage bed then move the boat over it and continue to cast as you work your way through the bed. The pike are not spooked by the boat as much when they are in the deep weeds.

With a shorter cast you will get a better hook set, increasing your chance of a better hook-up. With a long cast, if a big pike hits your lure he will run deep into the weeds and then you will also have the drag of the weeds pulling at your line when you go to set the hook.

TROPHY PIKE FISHING IN MANITOBA

Everybody knows that if you want to catch big pike, you've gotta go pike fishing in Canada, and in the heart of Canada, lies the province of Manitoba.  Manitoba has a huge reputation for producing big pike.  With barbless hooks being provincial law since the summer of 1990 and the province's promotion of catch and release being second to none, it's no wonder the fishing just keeps getting better.

Dunlop's Lodge is located in the northern part of the province, beyond the reach of everybody except for a select few as there are no roads here and the only way in is to fly in on our private airstrip.  With some of the biggest and best pike fishing in all of Manitoba, it is truly a privilege to work and fish on Lake Waskaiowaka.
